FAQ

Licensing questions.

Why is post-production free?

Because a project should never have to leave the app to be finished. Editors, colorists and mixers can work on any SP Studio project — or on footage from anywhere — without a license. You pay when you develop, write, design, board and shoot inside SP Studio.

Is the price monthly or annual?

Every paid plan is an annual license, paid up front. We show the monthly equivalent so plans are easy to compare, but there is no month-to-month option. Indie is $99 a month, billed as $1,188 per year. Pro is $179 a month, billed as $2,148 per year. Studio is $59 per seat per month, billed as $708 per seat per year, with a 5-seat minimum.

What counts as a seat?

A seat is one named person using the paid workspaces. People who only work in post-production don’t need a paid seat. We’re finalizing the exact seat rules with our partner studios and will publish them before general availability.

Do I pay SeriousPixel for engine and API usage?

No. You connect your own accounts with hosted providers, and they bill you directly. Open-weights engines that run on your own hardware cost nothing beyond your hardware and electricity. SP Studio shows an estimate before every batch and supports spend caps per project.

What does the license pay for?

One platform for the whole production, from the first Spark to delivered masters, instead of a separate tool for writing, boards, shooting, editing, color and sound. SP Studio is built first for SeriousPixel’s own productions and licensed to other studios. You also choose where every job runs: open-weights engines on your own hardware at no usage cost, or hosted engines on your own accounts when you need them. That choice keeps your production spend in your hands.

Are open-weights engines really free for my studio?

The engines are free to download, but each publisher sets its own terms. For example, LTX-2.5 is free for commercial use by organizations under $10M in annual revenue; larger studios need their own agreement with the publisher. SP Studio checks these terms against your organization profile and warns before a job runs.

What if my team grows during the year?

Upgrade any time and pay only the prorated difference for the rest of your license year. Moving from Indie to Pro, or from Pro to Studio, doesn’t change your projects — every version already records who made it. Each organization holds one plan, so seats from different plans can’t be combined.

Does the license work offline?

Licenses activate online or offline, so studios on locked-down networks can use SP Studio. A license check never blocks work on an external drive or interrupts a render in progress.

What happens to my projects if I stop paying?

They’re yours. Projects are plain folders in open formats — Fountain, YAML, OpenTimelineIO and standard media files — with full history. The post-production workspaces stay free, and you can always hand off to another editor.

Can I use SP Studio today?

SP Studio is in a partner beta with a small group of studios and filmmakers. Apply for the beta or request a demo.
